China holds ‘stunning lead’ over US in competition for key technology

A security think tank reported on Thursday that China holds an “impressive advantage” in 37 of 44 crucial and advanced technologies, as Western democracies fall behind in global research production. According to a study conducted by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), it was found that in certain areas, China is the home to the top 10 research institutions globally.

The United States State Department-funded study discovered that the U.S. was usually second-placed, even though it was at the forefront of global research in high-performance computing, quantum computing, small satellites and vaccines.

The report mentioned “Western democracies are losing the global technological competition, including the race for scientific and research breakthroughs,” urging greater research investment by governments. The report recommended that democratic countries should work together more frequently to secure supply chains and “take decisive action in developing strategic critical technologies”.

Apple blocks update to email app with ChatGPT tech

Yesterday, on March 2, Blix’s Ben Volach said that “Apple has blocked the BlueMail update and continues to treat BlueMail unfairly and to discriminate against us”. He also mentioned that “Other GPT-powered apps seem not to be restricted”.

Apple refused to accept the app update last week, requesting that the company which owns BlueMail adjust the age rating for users 17 and above or introduce content filtering, since BlueMail may contain content that is not suitable for everyone, based on a document viewed by Reuters.

“We want fairness. If we’re required to be 17-plus, then others should also have to,” Volach tweeted also he added that that there are other apps on Apple’s app store which claim to offer ChatGPT-like features but without age restrictions. Apple stated that developers have the chance to dispute any rejections through the App Review Board process.
